It doesn’t happen often, but every now and then you’ll have to deal with an employee who lies.
As the recipient of a lie, it’s no wonder we’re horrified. How stupid do they think we’re? Betrayal!
Don’t despair. Here are three proven tactics for dealing with liars:
STEP 1. LET THEM TALK
Liars can’t shut up, so let them talk.
They’ll blab because they know silence is uncomfortable. Silence can also be perceived as guilt.
So let them tell their yarn. Eventually they’ll spread so many lies that they’ll be confused by their own lying.
STEP 2. PLAY ALONG
Liars are emboldened because their audiences rarely call their bluff.
In other words, there are no consequences for lying.
Make consequences for the liars. Play along. For example, ask them to show you the beautiful vacation home that you suspect is a lie.
The liars will be frustrated. Now they can’t shake you. They’ve time to spend and more lies to prove themselves.
STEP 3. WAIT FOR THEM TO CONFESS
If you confront them about their deception, they may deny, get angry, and start attacking you personally. In other words, they’ll not admit their lies.
It’s far better to have them admit that they lied to you. They’ll have to play along with their lies, but eventually they’ll realize that they’re digging an even bigger grave for themselves with their lies, and they’ll claim the mea culpa so they can end the charade.
