What is PD@GE?
PD@GE is GE’s new professional development system that’s meant to replace its 40-year old performance review process.
The folks at GE gave us a sneak peek at their professional development system; we’ve got some screenshots to share below.
A central part of PD@GE includes:
Touchpoints: these are ongoing discussions with your manager, which are only visible between you two.
Insights: these are comments shared by your colleagues on what you’re doing well and not so well.
PD@GE’s Biggest Flaw
The PD@GE’s feedback section is by far and away the weakest component of their product development module. As this actual screenshot shows, the feedback tend to be:
Generic coaching (The solution always seems to be “take more training classes.”)
GE needs to go beyond traditional feedback; their employees are smart enough to tell that the peers and managers are far from insincere with their praise. As a result, the feedback will simply get discarded.
